How do I find a job after graduating from college?

I have heard that graduates struggle to get hired and work at jobs they are over qualified for. #after-college

Ruth’s Answer

Good question, Jorge! finding a job is a real concern for many people after graduation. here are a few tips for finding a job (and one you like).

1. don't wait until you graduate. find internships when you are in school to "try out" different potential career interests.

2. network early. what that means is talk to as many people around you about what they do and their career paths. if you really enjoy learning from someone, ask them if they can introduce you to others within their field to continue the "listening tour."

3. similar to #1, finding a summer job can allow you to try different things without fully commit to it longer term. remember, finding out what you DON'T want to do is just as important and helpful in figuring out what you really want to do. a summer or temp job is great for that! good luck!

Veronica’s Answer

I graduated from the University of South Alabama in December 14, 2013 with a BA degree in Art History with a Dramatic Arts minor. The job search has not been easy at all.

Veronica recommends the following next steps:

Go to networking events. Get out and make connections.
Volunteer. You would gain job experience that way.
Create a job. If all else fails, work for yourself. Entrepreneurship has been on the rise lately.
And remember this... the job hunt is not like it was when your older sibling (if you have one), parents and grandparent was job hunting.

Jerome’s Answer

Make sure you take initiative and be pro-active. Try not to wait until the last minute to start applying to jobs. Also, try not to put all of your eggs into one basket. One of the best things to do is to dedicate time and effort into searching and applying to jobs.

Jerome recommends the following next steps:

Create a professional resume and always make sure it is up to date
Start searching and looking for jobs that you might be of an interest to you
Start networking
Reach out to people that can refer to you to jobs that you might be interested in
Don't be afraid to take entry-level jobs because they can help you go and develop your career

Sovita’s Answer

Hi Jorge! Great question. Getting an internship can be a great stepping stone. Many times internship can lead to full time opportunities. Also, you should take advantage of career/job fair organized by your college. This is great opportunity to network. Also reach out your professors. They can help you network with potential employers, work with you on interviewing skills and resume.
