Firstly, it is a matter of interest.
Secondly, your patience counts a lot as you need to be calm and attentive while handling them.
Thirdly, you need to be sure of what to do in that situation thus, "Knowledge" counts too.
Last but not least, don't forget to take the precautions.
The feeling is wonderful as long as you really want to do something for them.

Handling sick or injured animals is hard and should be dealt with carefully and patiently but you have to get to a vet as soon as possible .

Depends a lot
the really sick ones are easy because they barely react you can do anything to them.
Some are stressed and sore so they are very difficult and aggressive. You need to be calm and know what you are doing, which you'll only know by experience.
It can be very upsetting seeing animals run over, terminally ill pets that have no chance and some animals you could save if money wasn't an issue. The otherside is you buildup very strong bonds with some patients when you can literally save their lives if you are good enough.
