I was always interested in welding (not as a career but for fun).. I would suggest similar steps but you'd want to take it a bit further than I did.

1. Go get a welder!!! some are cheap and some are not. I got a cheap MIG welder from harbor freight and then (after I found I liked it) a Miller 211 MIG Welder and some Argon and by doing it I've learned a ton. Safety/DIY techniques from YouTube/etc). I learn best by doing so if you're like that this one might help you the quickest even really see if you like it before you jump in to the next bit.. So many resources on line and various techniques and exercises you can try.. before long you'll be fixing stuff for folks (which can be a good and a bad thing) :)

2. Check out technical schools - Lincoln Tech is one that I've seen widely advertised as a great welding vocational school. Likely they have ability to help with job placement as well. Something like this will teach you the right way.

3. Go make great things happen!!! This is a sought after skill set that some times does not get notoriety of other professions but it should. Heck you might find yourself 300 feet below the surface of the ocean welding some critical item on an oil rig or something. :)

Hope this is helpful,
Don
