Does doing double major in tech academy at High School worth it?

I am a Junior in H.S. right now i am thinking about doing a double major in my tech academy, they have a guaranteed internship if you do this. But i am thinking if its worth it. Two tech classes back to back for the whole senior year. I take college classes at my nearest community college, so i know for a fact that i don't have soo much time to give to something that will not gonna help me or its worth it.

  1. Get a list of the intership companies you will be able to target and see if you like to work in those companies.
  2. Tech is a broad area, which area you like? I'd say cybersecurity and machine learning are a good fields to be in.
  3. Does your tech academy provide you the skill set that is applicable to work in most of the tech firms such as programming or IT management?
  4. Tech Academy maybe a good way to differentiate yourself if the curriculum offered matches the market condition. But if not, it's not a big deal to skip it due to the time pressure you are already under. You are live in the Silicon Valley, there is always jobs in the tech field.

Jacquelyn’s Answer

I think you should do it and go for both! Why not...you are young now and the more you get exposed to will provide you with better opportunitties down the road. It will enable you to have the freedom to make different choices and help you decide what it is you really want to do for the future. Your possibilities are limitless. Anyone who has a good technical background can then make the choice to transition to the Business side and be well rounded.

Jennifer’s Answer

Risk/Reward is important to consider . If you are motivated to double major and are able to be good/great in both fields -- Then Yes , it shows future employers that you have talent and discipline, and passion to accomplish more than others.

The major risk is that the 2nd major is taking alot of time, energy away from your core major . If you are unable to shine in either major then it weakens your prospects in the future.

My advice is to continue to go for both , you are young and wont have many chances to try 2 majors in life .

Brian’s Answer

The short answer is all almost all technical experience you can gain pays for itself in your career.

Things that don't pay off are non-technical skills.

FYI - this doesn't mean you shouldn't be a well rounded individual, you should, and you should find what your passion is.

However, careers going forward are going to require a certain floor of technical acumen and there isn't a current experience that I could think of that would be a waste of your team.

Always remember that while a passing grade is important, it's the experiences, things you build and people you meet that will have the greatest impact on your career.
