Hello, Leila !

This is such a thoughtful question, Leila, and I admire your altruism and your interest in giving back to the community. There are so many ways to assist those who have all different needs and you can make a big difference in people's lives. Unless you have a service plan in place, it would be difficult to say how much funding you would need, but there are so many ways and levels of service that you can do. So the first step is to decide exactly what type of service you want to develop and provide and who would be the target clients for it. Some things can be done working from home and other plans may include needing a rented space, so figure out the service plan first and than you can get an idea of how much start up money you'd need. You could also apply for grants sometimes depending on what the service is.

I have some ideas that you may consider for services and you can easily research funding and the "how to" for your area online. One thing that would help many people is to start a funding service for people who have an illness to help them pay for their bills. You would need donations and funding to offer assistance helping people pay for their electric bill, food, uncovered medical bills or rent. The big programs that are offered widely may not be enough and this would supplement or sometimes maybe be the only thing people can obtain.

Another thing that you may consider is to start a Scholarship or a Grant for underserved students in your area or nationwide. You would set the requirements, develop the application and procedures and receive applications from students to review and then choose the select students based on your funding budget.

The next idea that I have is to start some sort of service for seniors who lately are quite underserved. Of course everything would require funding. You can offer services such as running errands, assistance with applying for benefits, advocacy, housecleaning, friendly visits and phone calls, etc. I have left a link for you below with good information about this. Whatever service you offer, be sure to get enough funding so that the seniors receive this service at no cost to them.

There is a man and his wife in the El Cajon, CA area that started a service called Pete's Promise. They visit the homeless who are living on the streets and give them food, drink, clothing, tents, blankets and so many other things. They help out so many people. It's worth researching how to obtain funding (grants) to serve the homeless because shelter space and affordable housing right now is very difficult to find.

I know someone who once did a Toy Drive for the holidays for children and this person worked right out of the apartment doing it. People donated new toys, the person wrapped them in holiday paper and found out which families needed toys and then gave the toys out. No cost to this person except maybe the gas in the car to deliver the toys that needed to be delivered.

You could always start a food pantry and a clothing bank for people to obtain what they need. In order to get more ideas about which services to develop, think about what exactly you want to do and who would be the people you'd serve. There is a great need for private assistance organizations right now, so you would most likely be very successful in your endeavors.

My advice is to ask a lot of questions, do a lot of reading online about the subject and never give up. This work is very important and fulfilling and I applaud you for the direction you are going. I wish you all the best !

Leila,
Look around.
Everyone has some type of need.
Research shows we first need to meet people where they are and then help them be more.
All it takes is a smile, a friendly word.
Then, you can do some research. It is hard to do everything, but you can do something.
Where is your passion - good healthy food? Clean water? Education?
Find a reliable organization that is doing so, locally and/or globally and get involved.
Volunteer. Volunteers are golden and the fuel for so much that is done in the world.
Offer you time, your talents, and when able your treasures.
It is a wonderful way to meet others who have the same purpose as you do, and to help others be well.
All the best. Joanne

Hello Leila,

Helping the needy involves making a positive impact on individuals or communities who are experiencing hardships or lack essential resources. There are several ways one can extend a helping hand:

Volunteering: One can offer their time and skills to organizations that cater to the needs of the less fortunate. Volunteering at food banks, homeless shelters, hospitals, schools, and non-profit organizations are some examples of how one can make a difference.

Donating: Monetary contributions to charities, non-profit organizations, and relief funds help provide essential resources such as food, shelter, clothing, education, and medical care to those in need. Donations can be made online or through mail.

Fundraising: Organizing fundraising events such as charity walks, auctions, bake sales, or benefit concerts can help raise awareness and collect significant funds for various causes.

Advocacy: Using one’s voice to raise awareness about social issues and advocating for policies that support the needy is an effective way to bring about change. This can be done through social media platforms, community meetings, or contacting local representatives.

Education: Providing education and training opportunities to individuals in need can help them gain the necessary skills to improve their lives and become self-sufficient. This can be done through volunteering at schools or educational programs or by donating resources to educational institutions.

Mentoring: Offering guidance and support to individuals who are facing challenges in their personal or professional lives can help them overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. This can be done through volunteering as a mentor at schools or community organizations.

Direct assistance: Providing direct assistance such as food, clothing, transportation, or medical care to individuals in need is an effective way to make an immediate impact on their lives. This can be done through volunteering at organizations that provide these services or by donating resources directly to individuals in need.**

It’s important to note that there is no specific amount required to help the needy as every contribution counts towards making a positive impact on someone’s life.

Leila, it's important to understand that aiding those in need is a complex process that involves more than just financial aid. It also includes hands-on help. The amount of money needed to make a significant difference can vary widely, based on individual situations and the extent of the help provided. While financial aid is certainly important, it's not the only way to make a difference. Donating your time, skills, and knowledge can be just as meaningful. Furthermore, spreading the word, pushing for changes in policy, or simply providing emotional support can greatly improve the lives of those in need. At the end of the day, the desire to help others goes beyond just money. It demands compassion, dedication, and a readiness to help in any way possible.

Helping those in need is really about finding ways to make a positive impact, big or small. It could be as simple as donating some clothes you no longer wear to a local shelter or volunteering your time at a community kitchen. There are also opportunities to get involved in your neighborhood, like organizing a food drive or pitching in at a community clean-up event.

And it's not just about material things - sometimes, lending a listening ear or offering a kind word can make a huge difference to someone going through a tough time. You could even mentor a young person who could benefit from some guidance and support.

What's great is that there are so many ways to help, and it really comes down to finding what feels right for you. Whether it's through donating, volunteering, or simply being there for someone in need, every little bit helps in making the world a better place.
