First, let's break down your question/request:

1. That depends on how much time you're willing to invest in becoming a designer as this isn't something quick and simple to learn, you will be investing YEARS into this skill, so are you prepared to buckle down on this?
2. To be a professional artist, is technically the moment you make any kind of money off of your skill, so that's a mute point. To be an industry artist is when you work for a company (or companies), so which one are you aiming for?
3. Being "the best" in an art based field is about as subjective as art itself, so what you'll need to do instead is figure out which KIND OF DESIGNER you want to be, figure out what kinds of designs in that field you like doing the most, build a portfolio of those designs, and clients will either show up or if you apply for jobs in those fields, people will hire the hell out of you since you'll be exactly what they're looking for.

So, are you ready to become a bombass designer?

Kate’s Answer

Malcolm Gladwell in his book "Outliers" mentions the "10,000-Hour Rule", claiming that the key to achieving world-class expertise in any skill, is, to a large extent, a matter of practicing the correct way, for a total of around 10,000 hours. Unfortunately, it isn't that simple to just crank out designs for 10,000 hours... Good design isn't about quantity, it's about quality. What makes a great designer? Killer typography? An eye for color? Groundbreaking conceptual thinking? How do you develop that? Follow designers on social who are doing work that excites you. Learn design software and create work for friends and family. Going to design school is the best way to kick start an amazing career. Hope that helps and if you have any questions feel free to reach out.
