Great question and my answer to both Social Science and Accounting are absolutely.
Businesses today are successful when they understand their consumer audience. So much of this comes from understanding the social science behind demographics, other market segmentations, and what drives behaviors. I would add that this also builds empathy for your consumer enabling you to be their voice and get their needs. The social science study of psychographics is emerging and maturing and providing a more direct route to your potential consumers. Building a foundation with Social Science in High School and college is good business. Instead of taking the basic 100 or 200-level course, look for something more aligned with your business focus.
Accounting is so important. Even a basic understanding will help you keep on track financially as a business. Prior to owning businesses, I managed budgets for multi-million dollar projects (and smaller ones). I ran my department's budget and was grateful for my Intro to Accounting class and then later, Accounting for Small Business. It give me the knowledge I needed to ask good questions that helped me to learn and do well at this function. I would have been lost without it.
Remember, building a strong foundation of diverse knowledge will help you and make you a better business person regardless of your role.

Hi Asma, great question! The short answer to the question, "Do I need social science for a business major?" is no. You do not need it.
However, considering the original intent of the social science courses that tend to make up the "general education" requirements of the modern university, you might want to take these courses anyway.
Social science course content is intended to provide a diverse educational background in the first year or two of college, followed by specific study in the major of choice. In addition to the broad education, "The primary purpose [of social science courses] was more ambitious: to nurture a certain kind of person—observant, reflective, sensitive and thoughtful, but also someone who is an independent thinker" (Insider Higher Ed, 2022).
So, the long answer to the question, "Do I need social science for a business major?" is no longer a yes or no answer. The answer depends on what kind of educational foundation you want to gain in college.

Good morning, Asma. The answer is, it depends upon the school. Some universities have programs that are more diverse than others. When I went to university, my business program was too focused. I moved to liberal arts and took a lot of science classes and business classes. I then got my masters in business. I love science, so this background has kept me relevant in my field because I learned how to research and learn in my education and now it is second nature to me. My answer is, Accounting is great - there are always jobs in that field, so go for that, but never turn down opportunities to take science classes. Good luck in your education!
