What are my career options that will allow me to travel? How should I go about getting that career?

I’m about to be a junior in high school and I’m still not quite sure what to do after graduation. I would like to have a career in the STEM field but also really want to travel. #undecided

Hi Madison P.

I understand that you are still in high school, which, in my opinion, is the BEST time for you to be asking these types of questions. So good for you!

One very lucrative combination of STEM and travel includes technology jobs for well-known consulting companies. I encourage you to research global consulting companies, many of which have national television ads (sometimes on Sunday mornings during news programs :)) These, and even smaller consulting companies have and need STEM talent. If a candidate, like yourself, keeps an open mind on travel, that is even better.

In my experience, willingness to travel is very good lead into a sustainable and potentially lucrative career, depending on the career track chosen. Good luck!

Alexis’s Answer

You should think about going into travel nursing. I have several sorority sisters that ended up going this route and seeing all their pictures on IG gives me FOMO. You make incredible money, and get to travel the world for free pretty much. It would just be hard for me personally to always be on the road and away from family, but if something like that doesn't bother you, than you should look into it. This is great for nurses who are just graduating and starting out.

I agree with every suggestion that was made. you need to look for a company that has a global reach or possibly global clients that you would work with in-person or network with and as your passion with the field like are you really dedicate and determine to do this or it is just something you want to try for now and later change in the future. In the real world of work and career, there is a lot of different types of travel as for working too. Some positions offer daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly travel to different locations while other positions station in a specific location for weeks, months, or possibly years. With a global company, their range of positions can be across the globe or work from one location and travel to different sites it is all depend on the company, what they requires and who they work with because some company are contractor with others. So do some research or internship with the company before setting your full mind into working for them.

Jorge’s Answer

Madison,

I think it is awesome you want to pursue a career in STEM, there are so many great options there and while they may not necessarily come with the options to travel it really depends on the company and Industry you end up working in.

There are definitely ways that you can work in the STEM field and still have the experience of getting to know the world. A couple of things you may want to consider:

1/ Look to work in a company that has a Global reach, meaning an international footprint such as a Microsoft, or Procter and Gamble, Google, Apple.. you get the idea. These companies generally have roles that are directly involved in STEM and also provide opportunities to travel to different parts of the world where they have operations.

2/ Think about the possibility of taking on an expat assignment. Many companies offer their employees the opportunity to work abroad. I personally have done this in Mexico and Brazil and found the experience incredibly rewarding.

Hope this is helpful for you.

Regards
Jorge

I agree with Jorge. Look for a company that has a global reach or possibly global clients that you would work with in-person.

Remember there are different types of travel. Some positions offer daily or weekly travel to different locations while other positions station you in a specific location for weeks, months, or possibly years. With a global company, you could apply for positions across the globe or work from one location and travel to different sites.

Best of luck,
