Best way to ask for a recommendation letter to a PsyD program

Hello,

I am in the process of applying to PsyD programs and started to gather recommendation letters. I am finding it very anxiety provoking to ask current and past employers for recommendation letters for my application. I would love some advice on the best ways to ask for recommendation letters. #strategy #career #PsyD #gradschool #recommendations #psychologist #psychology

Thank you so much!

Anxiety in asking for recommendation letters is normal. However, all of us have done it at some point. One way to get over the anxiety in your mind is that the person you ask can - in the worst case say no.. but that almost never happens honestly. Remember by asking someone for a recommendation letter you are effectively saying to them "I respect what you do and am grateful for all that I've learnt from you. I see you as my mentor and helping me go to the next level ,.."..

Now that we are past the anxiety aspect all that you have to do is to recall what you did for them/learnt from them (all the positives) , tell them what you plan to pursue and why - and then politely ask if they can help you out with a recommendation letter. It is that simple! Best wishes.

Here are some steps anyone can take when asking for a letter of recommendation:

1. Make a list of individuals who you feel are most qualified to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf.

2. Reach out to each person on your list to verbally discuss the reason for your request. This will allow you time to provide them with all the information they need and for them to ask any questions. During this discussion, ask if they would be willing to write a letter of recommendation for you.

4. Follow up your verbal request with a written request. Be sure to include all vital information needed for them to write the letter of recommendation for you.

5. Send a thank you letter. Your appreciation will likely lead to them being willing to write another letter of recommendation for you in the future.

Good Luck!

Devon,
First, I'd like to congratulate you on continuing your education journey. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Asking for a recommendation can cause anxiety but there are a few things you can do to help reduce this and feel confident in the request. The biggest thing is making sure you are asking for the recommendation from someone who knows you well. Often times, I see people ask managers they rarely worked with instead of their direct reporting manager. The reasons it feels almost awkward is the person doesn't know your accomplishments as much as your direct boss. Pick the person you had a good working relationship but also has credible credentials. Lastly, in the letter include something about that person that you learned from them and thank them for it. It will go a long way.

Good luck. You got this!
