Lots of different direction you can go here. Marketing, finance, operations (such as logistic, supply chain), engineering, law, etc. Business is increasingly international. For instance, in the company I work for, I have team members all over the world.

With International Business you could work in different areas like Operations, Marketing, Supply Chain, Finance etc. I would recommend picking a few classes in the area of your interest in the final year. That will make your entry into your area of interest a little easier.

Carlos’s Answer

Hi Amy,

I was an International Relations major in college and ended up working as an analyst in the Commodity Finance group for a bank. My industry deals with oil, natural gas, metals, and agricultural clients that are both domestic and international. Some of our deals are syndicated and include European and Asian banks. The deals I work on include working with other groups such as Investment Banking, Sales and Trading (S&T), Equipment Finance, Global Advisory etc. to provide a variety of products and services to our clients. Having that sort of exposure with the other groups and a variety of diverse clientele allows you to get great experience in multiple areas of finance and the opportunity to network with other professionals from different fields.

I would recommend looking at the Capital Markets, Energy, and S&T groups at banks for internship opportunities. These groups are great for undergraduates seeking to gain a thorough understanding of international financial markets and how these markets fluctuate due to political, economic, and natural events on a daily basis.

Carlos recommends the following next steps:

Find and join investment clubs and/or Business Fraternities in your University.
Look for internship opportunities through on campus recruiting/ LinkedIn/Company Websites
Take courses relevant to different internship opportunities you find interesting.
Reach out and speak with either students who have completed these internships or with analysts from these companies. (Cold emailing is crucial)
Speak with your finance professors about your interests! They have either worked in the fields you're interested in or know others who have.
