Bridget’s Answer

Both Laura and Sherman are generally correct - to add most licensing costs $300-500 in initial course fees, licensing can be between $60 to 80, MLS fees range from $250 to 500 for initial year fees. Then there are other monthly and yearly fees and continueing ed courses agents are required to take. Being your own boss means you are responsible for building your business, but for the first few years you will need to be managed by a Broker. Brokers will usually charge a percentage of your commissins earned and will charge a fee for office use. If you are interested in knowing more about the Real Estate world you can find me on LinkedIn. Hope this helps!

Laura’s Answer

Real Estate Agents have to be licensed under a Real Estate Broker. You can also get a Broker's license and own your own Real Estate Agency and have Agents working under you. Agents get a commission ($$) and the Broker gets a percentage of that commission...so the more Agents you have under your license, the more commission you get. Brokers and also be their own agent and assist clients in buying/selling property. Brokerage offices such as Century 21 have multiple Brokers and agents, but there are small Real Estate Agencies that have a Broker and several Agents, or even just Brokers that work as individuals with no agents under them. In short, if you want to be a Real Estate Agent, you are working 'under' a Broker, or you can be a Broker and be your own boss!

Sherman’s Answer

Yes and no, you're basically your own boss but there is a management team that will provide guidance. Some national real estate firms have very comprehensive training programs so you should look into them when doing your research.
