What is the best way to get started on applying for internships or gaining experience in the field of computer engineering?

I'm a rising sophomore in college pursuing a major in computer engineering. I want to gain experience in the field to be ready for the workforce. How would I get started in doing so?

1.) Join coding contests where you can collaborate with a team to create a solution. Numerous events sponsored by various companies and organizations are available. You can easily find these gatherings (both in-person and online) with a quick internet search. As someone that graduated college just last year I think I have some pretty good insight into your question. I highly recommend checking out career fairs are your school because that is where companies seek out students they want. If you get the link to applications from these career fairs, it often bypasses the first general round and puts you as a leading candidate to get interviewed. I also cannot stress enough how much your own personal network can help you. Setting up coffee chats with connects that work at companies you're interested in is a great way to learn more about the company culture and can often help you land an interview.

Along with these methods, apply, apply, apply, to anything you might be interested in. Getting an internship or a job is a very stressful process and requires getting over the fear of rejection and not being discouraged when things might not go your way. The more you apply, the more likely you are to get an interview.

In my own experience having an internal connect at a company got me a lot farther than sending out 100 applications (which I also did). I got my second internship without a connect and mass applying, but I got my full time job with an internal connect. Both methods work, but I do feel like a connect is more effective so work on broadening your network!

I think the BEST way to start getting your foot in the door is to attend recruiting events at your school. Make sure you get face to face time with recruiters and talk to them about your interests. The beauty about being a sophomore in college is that you have plenty of time. Definitely take the time to go to events and sign up for as much face time as possible.
