Kazi’s Answer

Herbal medicine is a form of alternative medicine.
In the USA conventional medicine is well-recognized as modern/western medicine.
Alternative or integrated approaches of therapies such as acupuncture, herbs, meditation, yoga music therapy, mindfulness, etc. do not replace Western medicine. Still, these could help bring wellness and improve quality of life.
To my knowledge, they are labeled as Eastern and Western medicine.

James Constantine’s Answer

Hello Love!

ME:

I got a Bachelor of Science in about 50 years ago. It was a new university and we were the first inaugural students it was Griffith University in Brisbane. Throughout my career I've been associated with natural health practitioners and the conventional diet and nutrition school. I have had work experience with Naturopaths as early as 1981. But what was most interesting was talking to Lady Dr Phyllis Cilento who said I should not become a dietitian I should just study the doctor's course in orthomolecular nutrition from Sydney. Unfortunately Phyllis died the next year.

I did both courses the orthomolecular course and the conventional dietitians degree. I was really fortunate enough to work with doctors like Colin Holloway and Alan Hadley who were using natural compounds to treat disease. The "pearler" was when I applied to Safe College of Natural Therapies for a job as a lecturer and they accepted me. The dean so much valued my knowledge that he wanted me to come and work for him in a company of this own called BioMedicals.

Merging Herbs and Contemporary Medicine in Academia

A Primer on Holistic Medicine

Holistic medicine, also known as integrative medicine, is a unique approach that marries traditional medical practices with alternative therapies, such as herbal medicine. This discipline aims to provide comprehensive care by addressing not only the physical but also the emotional and spiritual aspects of health. The fusion of herbs into contemporary medicine can amplify treatment choices and boost patient results.

Academic Institutions Providing Pertinent Courses

The course structure stresses the application of botanical medicine within a wider context of holistic health care, enabling students to delve into both age-old herbal practices and contemporary medical science.

University of Maryland, Baltimore - The University provides a Master’s degree in Complementary and Alternative Medicine via its School of Pharmacy. This course involves studying herbal products and their uses within clinical environments, with a focus on evidence-based methods to incorporate these therapies into patient care.

California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) - CIIS offers a Master’s degree in East-West Psychology which encompasses studies on herbalism as part of comprehensive health practices. This course encourages investigation into how traditional healing methodologies can supplement modern medical practices.

Herbal Academy - Although not a conventional college, the Herbal Academy offers thorough online courses centered on herbalism, which can be advantageous for those wishing to incorporate herbs into their practice or personal health routine.
