How is a dermatologists life outside of work?

I aspire to be a dermatologist and I wonder how their life is outside of work. Like do they have a lot of free time if any and what are their typical hours? Also, do they always work at a hospital or can they have their own business? #medicine #business #dermatologist

Stephanie’s Answer

Hi Zuhaad,

While I am not a Dermatologist myself, I have some friends who are. Two work in hospitals and the 1 runs their own business. I would say that on average they work 8-10 hour days. The one who runs their own business can sometimes have longer days. They definitely have more flexibility when it comes to their schedule. All of them have great work-life balance.

Stephanie recommends the following next steps:

I would recommend going and conducting a few informational interviews with Dermatologists in your area. And asking them first hand what their days are like? If working in Hospital or owning your own business will give the free time you are inquiring about.

Richard’s Answer

My sister is a dermatologist and she seems to have the best work life balance of any physician. She worked 3.5 days per week when her children were young. She also has no night or weekend call unlike many medical specialties.

Lauri’s Answer

I have some friends that are dermatologist and work in offices and have a normal life for the most part. They work Mon-Fri, pretty normal hours and are never on call at nights or weekends. Not sure if that would be the same if they worked in a hospital. One chose this field because they could still practice medicine but not have crazy, long hours, and not have to worry about being on call.
