Is a degree important for being a cartoonist?

Is a degree in illustration or graphic design or sequential arts necessary for a career in comics? Or could I just have a decent portfolio to prove my talents? #cartoons #comic-books #cartooning

Thank you comment icon Aurora, generally you do not need a degree for cartooning or comics. People are mainly interested in your portfolio of work, that you act professionally and, above all, respect their budgets and deadlines. If you want to be hired full-time as a graphic designer you may need a degree. But whether you did or did not, you would still have to prove (with your portfolio) that you do rock solid work and have a proven track record of delivering for clients. Some graphic designers have degrees, but unimpressive portfolios and struggle to find work. YouTube is chock full of useful (and useless) videos. The trick is figuring out which are the good ones. Check out Will Terry and Jake Parker for starters and go from there. Good luck and have fun! John Nelson
