Hello Brown,
Good question! You can pursue both passions—becoming a doctor specializing in eyes (like an ophthalmologist) and being a musician. It might take some balancing, but it’s definitely possible to follow both paths. Let’s break it down:
Becoming a Doctor of Eyes
1. Commitment to Medicine
- Becoming an ophthalmologist requires years of study: undergraduate education, medical school, and specialized training. It’s a long journey, but if helping people with their vision is your dream, it’s worth it.
2. Time Management
- Medical training can be demanding, but many doctors find time for hobbies or side pursuits. Music could be your way to de-stress and stay creative while working toward your medical goals.
Being a Musician Alongside Medicine
1. Music as a Passion, Not Pressure
- You don’t have to choose music as your main career to pursue it. Many people succeed in their primary profession while also growing their talent in music.
- Think of music as something that enhances your life and potentially your medical practice too—it can help you connect with others, inspire patients, or even build a unique personal brand.
2. Opportunities to Grow as a Musician
- Perform at local gigs, upload your music online, or collaborate with others when you have free time.
- Some doctors are also musicians who release music, perform part-time, or even use their platform to advocate for causes they care about.
Can You Do Both?
Yes, you can! It will take strong time management skills, dedication, and a clear sense of priorities, but many people have successfully balanced careers in both science and the arts. Your love for music and medicine can complement each other in amazing ways.
The best part is, you don’t have to decide everything right now. Follow your dream of becoming an eye doctor while keeping music as a meaningful part of your life. As you grow, you might find ways to merge these two passions, or you might decide to focus on one more than the other. Either way, you’re creating a unique path that’s true to you—and that’s what matters most!
Best wishes!

I agree with Chinyere. My sister is an optometrists and it's a role that's allowed her a lot of flexibility in her life, which would allow one to peruse additional interests. Optometrist isn't the same as an Ophthalmologist, but is another avenue for some and allow for more flexibility.

Do what feels right in your heart, while considering what you need to survive & thrive in life. We all need money coming in at the end of the day, but we also need to live a life filled with passion and fun. I whole heartedly believe you can do both! You could go to school to become an eye doctor, and maybe join a band or a singing club at school to merge your passions!
Join a club in school for music
Join a band or start a band
Go to open mic nights
