Hi Francisca!

Preparing for medical school while in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is a great strategy to build a strong academic foundation. Here are some recommended IB courses that will help you develop the necessary skills and knowledge for medical school:

Recommended IB Courses
Biology (Higher Level):
Why: Understanding the principles of biology is crucial for medical studies. The syllabus covers topics like human physiology, genetics, and ecology, all of which are foundational for medicine.

Chemistry (Higher Level):
Why: Medical school requires a solid understanding of chemistry, particularly organic and biochemistry, as it relates to pharmaceuticals and human metabolism. Higher Level Chemistry is advantageous for mastering complex concepts.

Mathematics (Higher Level):
Why: Strong math skills are essential for analyzing scientific data and understanding medical statistics. Higher Level Mathematics develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Physics (Standard Level or Higher Level):
Why: Physics helps in understanding the principles that govern medical technologies and equipment, though it’s more vital in certain specialties. Consider taking it at Higher Level if you have a strong interest in its applications in medicine.

Psychology (Standard Level or Higher Level):
Why: Psychology provides insight into human behavior and mental health, which are important in medical practice. Understanding psychological principles is beneficial for patient interaction and care.

Language A: Language and Literature (Higher Level):
Why: Strong communication skills are essential in medicine—both for interacting with patients and for understanding medical literature. A higher level in languages improves writing and critical analysis skills.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK):
Why: While not a traditional science course, this course encourages critical thinking and the evaluation of knowledge, both essential for a future in medicine.

Extended Essay (in a relevant subject):
Why: Choose a subject related to medicine, biology, chemistry, or psychology for your Extended Essay. This independent research project will help develop your research skills and deepen your understanding of a particular topic.

Additional Preparations
Extracurricular Activities: Participate in extracurricular activities related to medicine, such as volunteering, joining science clubs, or engaging in community service. These experiences enhance your application to medical school by demonstrating your commitment to the field.

Internships or Shadowing: Seek opportunities to shadow medical professionals or gain internship experience in healthcare settings. This exposure is invaluable in understanding the medical profession.

Keep Options Open: While the courses mentioned are highly recommended, ensure that you also consider your interests and strengths. Choose courses that you are passionate about since enjoying your subjects can lead to better performance.

Advice from Counselors: Consult with your IB coordinator or academic advisor to ensure that your course selections align well with your medical school aspirations and meet any specific requirements for your desired medical programs.

Focusing on Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and other relevant subjects will provide you with a strong foundation for medical school. Emphasize excelling in these courses while seeking out practical experiences in the medical field. Balancing your academic pursuits with extracurricular activities will enhance your profile as a future medical student. Good luck on your journey!
