You have to fuel your own passion. i have being cooking for over 50 years and i get bored with cooking the same foods over and over again. So, I try to new cuisines and new tecnetics and new things. It also depends on where you work and the type of cooking that you do. Example if you working in and contorted kitchen hospital or nursing home you could not experiment as much as a country club. That being said I you can do other things to learn. This year I am learning to do gingerbread houses on a bigger scale then your store-bought kit.

Cooking and baking are an art. If you have a creative mind, you will most likely want to try it "this way or that way"
If you paint, you can choose thousands of different kinds of paints or colors, blending them makes it even more interesting.
Trying new techniques or applications makes it mysterious.
This is the same with cooking. Who would have thought that if you add Worcestershire sauce to burgers could add a whole new level or even adding jalapenos, diced, could add a kick to it? it's experimenting and allowing your mouth to examine the burst full of flavors and reimagine what a ground beef or turkey could actually be.
Different spices can bring people together, especially if they are not from this country. Add something from their country and they may spark an interest of eating your food because that one added spice brings back memories of their country or the foods that "mom" made for them.
"fusion" is a word that folks are using when they add one culture to another. Although they may be from the same country, the different locations can add flavors, ie...adding butter to rice before cooking it, makes the rice have a smooth, creamier texture and flavor. Some Asians would never think to do this, but some of the Hispanic culture adds butter to rice. There is a huge difference to the flavor and you have created "fusion"

I’m not sure there is such a thing as
“ top of your field.” I think food and culinary arts presents such a vast array of possibility, that you can spend a lifetime learning.
Food study encompasses history, culture, anthropology, economics, language, sociology. There are master chefs of course but one can never know everything.
Which is why being a chef can become such a great calling.

Hay Joshua, To be honest you're never on top of your game in the culinary world. There are just too many variations in cultures, recipes, ingredients and ideas of food. You will find as you get experience that there is an endless variety of making the same item depending on whom and where you learn from. Once you think you have a pretty good idea of all the basic cooking technics and ingredient knowledge, you can start to explore more creative cuisines from around the world. Everyone has a different idea and eye for the way things should or can be done. Find your niche and keep experimenting with as many different cultural ingredients and through trial and errors you'll come close to being at the top of your game. Never think you have reached the top because in this crazy world of food it's endless. Have fun trying to get there and taste the world around you. Good luck.
