Yes it is a good idea to take classes toward a minor. Even though a minor is not as important as a major, developing skills in a minor program could help you differentiate yourself in the job search.

Hi Amanda,

Great question. In my personal experience I added a minor to my major. I did accounting and finance as a major and sports marketing as a minor. I think a minor can really be used to broaden your horizon and open more doors. Sports marketing was very different than accounting and finance so I was able to look at totally new possible careers while still focusing on accounting. I think a minor would be a great idea and will definitely help you stand out with employers!

Hi Amanda,

Short answer yes! Use it as an opportunity to broaden your horizons and/or specialize. For example, I was a psychology major, sociology minor and earned a criminology certificate. While I enjoyed studying all of them, I wonder if it would have been better to minor is something out of the social sciences realm to diversify a little bit. For example minoring in a foreign language, education or business could have opened some additional doors for me. My sister was a marketing major, arts minor and concentration in calculus. The art and math background actually helped her as she works in product development.

Best of luck!

Natalie

Yes, that would be a great idea.  Ideally you would take classes that can overlap and apply to your major and minor.  If you have the time and finances then taking classes that apply to your minor is a good idea if your minor supports your major.  Let's say your major is computer science and you have a minor in math.  Those compliment each other.  If you major is computer science and your minor is art, that may not be a good fit unless you want to do something like computer aided design.  Best wishes!
