Lawyers like reading a lot because their job involves understanding rules, laws, and stories about past cases. Reading helps us learn important details, think clearly, and find the best way to help our clients. It’s like solving puzzles where every word matters!
However, you don’t have to love reading to be a lawyer, but you do need to be okay with it. We read to understand the law, solve problems, and help people. If you’re curious and enjoy learning new things, you can do great, even if reading isn’t your favorite, but I love that it is!!

Hi Jackson,
It's possible that people who like reading are drawn to the legal profession, but of course that's not always true. As A. Hampton pointed out, you don't have to love reading to be a lawyer. It just happens that lawyers tend to read a lot because it's part of the job. I even know some attorneys who do not like reading, but they still enjoy other aspects of legal practice.
If you're talking about reading for leisure, I'd say that's probably a personal preference. Some folks just like to read, and it's not something that's unique to lawyers.
It's great that you like reading -- it's such a great way to learn about the world and walk in other people's shoes. Whether you end up deciding to become a lawyer or not, I would encourage you to continue your reading habits and allow yourself the opportunity to read a wide variety of books.

Hi Jackson - great question! I agree with the previous answers. In general, you will read a lot in law school and then continue to do so as a lawyer. Reading and analyzing are critical skills for lawyers, and lawyers spend a lot of time reading case law, statutes/laws, and facts/details about their cases. You will also need to do a lot of writing! If you are thinking about being a lawyer, it's good that you like to read, and reading a lot now and practicing that skill may come in handy one day!
Good luck!
