You are asking a very important question. The best way to start is by getting to know yourself better and then finding natural connections with people who share the same interests and have common links. Through my years in Human Resources, I have found that the following steps will help you to make great connections now and throughout your college and career journey.

Ken recommends the following next steps:

Take an interest and aptitude test and have it interpreted by a counselor to determine how your personality traits relate to career areas. When doing college recruiting, I found too many college students who skipped that step and ended up in jobs/career areas for which they were ill suited.
Talk to the person at your school who works with and tracks graduates to arrange to meet, talk to, visit, and possibly shadow graduates who are working in the career areas indicated by the test to see what they do, where they do it, and how you feel about it. Here are some good tips on how to get good information. ## http://www.wikihow.com/Network ## ## https://www.themuse.com/advice/nonawkward-ways-to-start-and-end-networking-conversations ## ## https://www.themuse.com/advice/4-questions-to-ask-your-network-besides-can-you-get-me-a-job?ref=carousel-slide-1 ## You can do this also for college connections by phoning the Director of Alumni Relations at college which you have an interest to create connections and relationships with people who have graduated from that college and are involved in your area of interest. Making a phone call is going to be the most effective way of getting information as it allows for a two way dialogue, which is most likely to allow you to get maximum assistance.
Locate professional associations to which people working in your career area of interest belong, so that you can go to meetings and meet and talk to people who are doing what you think that you might want to do. These associations are open to students and many times have internship, shadowing, and scholarship opportunities available to students. Hang’s Answer

Take whatever internships you can, even the ones that are not paid. As long as they are related to the field you are interested in, it will help you to build experience and connection with future potential employers.

Karina’s Answer

Hi Hunter!

I think the best way to gain connections is via societies and internships because you will have a higher chance of meeting someone with similar interests so you will have more topics in common to discuss.

Hope you have a good day!
