Unless the class literally requires in-class work on a laptop, I would say having one with you isn't really important at all.
I've found I do much better with pen and paper. Going analog helps me take notes almost thoughtlessly and really focus on what's being presented. I tried taking notes on my laptop for several years (both in college and at work) and figured out I was being dishonest with myself when I thought I was managing the distractions that almost always come up when you're taking notes on a laptop, tablet, or phone.
There's data to back this up. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2009/03/in-class-laptop-use-may-be-sparking-a-backlash/ In many cases, having a laptop with you in class can actually be a detriment, both to yourself and others.
If you are really good about only having your notes up (and hiding all other apps, notifications, etc.) it seems to work OK for some people. I am not one of those people.

I would recommend seeing if your school suggest a particular laptop, or have partnerships with Dell or Apple to get you a laptop at a discounted rate.
