A dental hygienist is an associate in applied science, and in some programs, you finish with a bachelor's degree in science. Each state has different requirements for becoming a dental hygienist. However, every program has prerequisites, and then you apply for a spot in the program. Getting into a program is tricky; the classes in the program include:
Anatomy and physiology.
Dental anatomy.
Radiology.
Community Health.
Ethics.
Oral pathology.
Pharmacology.
Periodontology, among others.
The dental hygiene program also includes clinical hours, which makes the program demanding enough. As a hygienist, I can say that it is a hard program, but if you make it through, you will never regret it.

The specific classes required for a dental hygienist may vary from program to program. Many programs require prerequisite classes prior to applying. Some dental hygiene programs are two years in length offering an associate degree while others may be four years offering a bachelor’s degree. Some students may complete the required prerequisite classes in one year and others in two years. Either way, depending on the state you live in the license should be the same and should not affect your employability. Some prerequisites may include, biology, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, microbiology, mathematics. The program classes are designed to cover all aspects of becoming a dental hygienist.
