This is a great question and can be a difficult and scary one at times.
Computer Science is an ever-changing field and deciding what discipline you and career path you want to take can be a daunting task.
Above all else understand while having a plan is important having flexibility is more important is an industry that changes year to year and sometimes day to day. While you always want to have a path you need to understand that the choice you make does not limit you from pursuing other adjacent areas or disciplines if you decide you chose wrong or you find something that interests you more.
I have been in this industry for more than 3 decades and have worked in various roles and while I have never felt limited to what I was doing at a time I have watched others who defined themselves by what they do (I am a Windows technician, I am a C++ developer, I am ....) My advice to you is if you see a specialty or discipline that excites you pursue it but do not let that define you as to who you are or what you can do. Instead of becoming an API Developer or AI Prompt Engineer introduce yourself as I am a technologist who is working on developing APIs. As long as you look at yourself as a technologist first you can always define your role and more importantly change roles if you want.
