Could you give me advice on working as assistant of genetic counselor in New York?
I would like to work as a volunteer assistant of genetic counselor.
Two things I’m struggling now.
1. I’m not native English speaker.
2.I don’t have certificate of genetic counseling in the United States. I have the one in Japan.
I live in New York,
I would appreciate any information or opportunity for the challenge.

Hello, Haruka !
What a most interesting career you have been certified in !
First, I can guide you to where to go for a possible volunteer experience for this in New York City. The places that provide genetic counseling in New York City are: Carnegie South Imaging for Women148 Madison Avenue, 10th Floor, (212) 4271576. Carnegie Hill Imaging for Women: Located at 1245 Madison Avenue (212) 7227426. Maternal Fetal Care Center 38 East 32nd Street, 4th Floor, NYU Langone OBGYN Associates in Midwood 97 Amity Street Brooklyn, New York Presbyterian and try Columbia University Genetic Counseling Services. For each of these places, I would advise going to the Human Resources Department in their building.
Keep in mind that volunteer work is different than employment so different things would be expected if you want to obtain employment. I think you'd be able to volunteer, but most likely they would not be having you work with patients since you'd probably need an American Certification in Genetic Counseling. It is worth finding out about this directly at the companies.
Don't worry too much about not being native English speaking as you are not alone with that in New York City. Your writing seems fine and you will always progress with that. I don't think it will be an issue unless you need an interpreter because most companies don't budget for interpreters and interpreters are expensive.
Although you would not need to be licensed in the state of New York, you may want to think about getting American Certification for Genetic Counseling. You can contact the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling and I have left the link to their website for you below. You can learn about American certification for genetic counseling from the National Society of Genetic Counselors. The link to their website is below.
I hope this helps you out for a good beginning and I wish you all the best !
