D'Lynne’s Answer

According to ZipRecruiter.com, as of Jan 19, 2019, the average annual pay for a Heavy Equipment Operator in the United States is $42,047 a year or $20.21 per hour.

While ZipRecruiter is seeing annual salaries as high as $61,000 and as low as $22,500, the majority of Heavy Equipment Operator salaries currently range between $34,000 (25th percentile) to $48,000 (75th percentile) across the United States.

D'Lynne recommends the following next steps:

Arrange to visit your city or county Public Works Department. The employees there handle a variety of heavy equipment and it might be possible to take a tour and/or spend a day with an operator. Your city or county website should have an email address for the Public Works Director. Email them and explain your interest in being a Heavy Equipment Operator and ask them if they can give you any advice and if they could arrange for you to visit and tour the facilities and talk to other Heavy Equipment Operators.
