How can I use a business degree in a small town?

I'm going to #college for business but I don't want to move to the city. I need to know what my best career option is. #business #administration

Thank you comment icon Hi Sharon . In a small town I think the best business to start is one that can attract customers based on what the town mostly needs. For example, the town I am originally from did not have a grocery store so they built one. But it was only successful for a few years. I think you need the right vendors and the right strategy to market a business in a small town but it can be done. You have to know is it going to be in the part of town where the most traffic occurs and also is it going to bring jobs to the town. Hiring the right employees is key as well. You have find ways to invest in your town by talking to people who shop in town as well ask them what type of business they would like to see started. Alexis K. Ellis

Sharon, How small is your town? While some small towns may have areas where you can use your degree it may not have a wide variety. It depends on how small your town is and what are some of the businesses that are available in that town.

Thank you comment icon The nearest businesses are 20 minutes away and include fast food, hair salons, banks, gas stations, and I believe a real estate agency. Many businesses are agriculture related but I don't know how my degree will be useful in those areas. Sharon
Thank you comment icon Sandra, I grew up in a very rural area and can relate. Don't limit yourself to the jobs you see every day. More & more companies are enabling remote work forces. It would involve being away from your home community at times to build out your skillset & occasional travel into main HQ. So much can be done from home that it doesn't always matter where your home is. It's about good communication, delivering a good work product. I'd encourage you to seek out more information about remote workforce and what companies are doing more of that. I hope this helped. Katherine Zubow - Farshler

Hi Sharon, I am not sure how small is your town referring and what you would like to do, i.e. you would like to be an entrepreneur to run your own business or you would like to be a employee of some business organization.

From above, I have noticed that the nearest business is 20 min away. If you would like to be an entrepreneur, you can observe what the highest local demand on, e.g. do they need some snack or drink? Books, etc. Hence, you may consider whether you can start a convenience store, cafe, book store, etc. You can also conduct small research on the customer demand and check out any vacant space for your shop.

On the other hand, if you would like contribute your knowledge in some business organisation, you may need to check any opportunities or offer in the nearest business area.

Hope this help!

Hi Sharon . I too come from a smaller town and grew up in a family of small business owners. Your business degree will only fuel your business acumen and provide you with insights that others may not have. Try using your insights and be somewhat of a consultant. Research and inspect the businesses in your town. You can leverage the lessons learned from earning your degree and identify the gaps in how one of the local businesses are ran/operates. This could help you to open a competing business and operate with a better business model. You could also operate a consulting business and use your degree to help others understand how to better their businesses as well.
