Hi Bella! I am a hobby-sewer not a professional, but hope my answer can be helpful.

First things first: what do you consider a "small" project versus a "large" project? For example, are we talking about a pillowcase versus a quilted blanket? Are we talking about different articles of clothing? All of these could be considered on the scale of small to large, so it really depends on what you are starting with.

Second: Do you have a pattern you are working from, or will you have to create a pattern? Pattern creation can take quite a bit of time, but if you are following a pattern then this comes down to the time it takes to read and cut out the required pattern pieces!

Hand sewing will always take longer than machine sewing, but shouldn't deter you from trying hand sewing if that's your only option! Just know that it will take a lot longer to sew by hand.

With all of this said, a really small project could take an hour to a few hours, while a large project could take days to weeks. If you prepare ahead of time it can take much less time to perform the actual sewing!

Susan’s Answer

While there are general time estimates for sewing various clothing items, the actual time can vary significantly based on individual circumstances/skill level. For the most accurate planning, it's best to assess the specific pattern and your own sewing experience.

Factors Affecting Sewing Time
1. Skill Level: More experienced sewers may complete projects faster.
2. Equipment: Having quality tools (sewing machine, scissors, etc.) can speed up the process.
3. Preparation: Pre-washing fabric, cutting out pieces, and organizing materials can add time but will streamline the actual sewing process.
4. Techniques Used: Advanced techniques (like French seams or intricate embellishments) will increase the time required.
