What are Some Careers in Theatre?

I'm majoring technical theatre and design in college, which is my passion. I'd like to know what my options are, for a career. I do scenic design, but it isn't what I'd want to spend my life doing. I like the idea of having a higher position in the performing theatre. Perhaps, overseeing the designs done by the costuming, lighting, and scenic designers. I want something more overall that pertains to the entire field itself. #theatre #theatrical-production #set-design #construction-set-building #technical-design #stage-lighting #costume-design #costumer #production

Thank you comment icon Hey Ozyria. It sounds you don't necessarily want to be boxed into just one individual design slot. While I feel that right out of college, a likely starting point will be one of those areas, it could (and typically does) lead to broader, more supervisory opportunities. The positions that would cover all areas of design would typically be an Artistic Designer or Artistic Director. For those positions, they are typically the ones that the other departments will go to, in conjunction with the director and other designers, to bring all the designs into place. Working with the show's director through these positions would allow you to oversee the different departments. It already sounds like you've got the right mindset to follow through, and hopefully, this helped a little bit. Best of luck! Domonic Tracy
Thank you comment icon Hi Ozyria, here is a link to Arts and Design Occupations to give you a scope of careers. Best wishes in your search! https://www.bls.gov/ooh/arts-and-design/home.htm Robert Calobrisi

Careers in the theater outside of performance offer many opportunities. The kind of job you are suggesting will require a broad theater background. My suggestion would be to find an established theater that offers apprenticeships or internships. As an apprentice you will often have an opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals in a variety of areas. During my summer apprenticeship at the Berkshire Theater Festival, I worked in: Lighting; props; scene shop; costuming; stage management; house management; public relations. In addition to the hands on experience, I learned how theaters operate and made many good networking connections.

I graduated in Theatre Design with and emphasis in Set & Costume, and I can assure you that there are a plethora of jobs for the committed in the theatre industry. The real question is how much you want to earn, in which case a union/equity track is ideal, but there are also many educational and community positions across the nation, it really depends on your strengths and interests. Since I can draw and paint, I’ve worked as a scenic charge, propsmaster, costume designer, set designer, and projections designer. There are also plenty of odd jobs if you go to the busier hubs like New York, Chicago, San Francisco, etc.
