How important are SAT grades?

In applying for colleges, are SAT grades more or less valued than other aspects of your profile (ex; volunteer hours, etc.)? In addition to this, how important are your scores in the varying areas of the SAT in relation to your major?

Rachel’s Answer

SAT score and GPA are by far the most defining portions of your application. After that, schools consider leadership, volunteering, and athletic or music abilities.

Good question Yazmeen. I am not a college admissions officer nor a college counselor so I cant be 100% sure, but based off of personal experience I would say that your GPA is weighted 40%, SAT/ACT weighted 40%, and your extracurriculars are weighted 20%. What I mean by this is that your SAT is 40% responsible for the decision that a college makes in reference to accepting/denying you. Your overall SAT is the most important part of that 40%, but colleges do see how you scored across the different SAT subjects.

While we may not like it and while standardized tests may not be a perfect system, it is the system that is used to evaluate a prospective student. Do the best that you can on the SAT as is plays a fairly significant role in the college admissions process (as does your GPA). Grade matter, so do the best that you can as it will better ensure that you are able to get into the college of your choice.

Best,

Austin
