A few things to consider when you consider getting into finance.

Technology and regulation - understand the different developments in finance and fintech. This is an evolving field. Try to keep abreast of developing technologies in finance. (Try googling FinTechs and then TechFins, and understand where the industry is going). While Crypto is big in the news, there are so many developments in finance like Buy Now Pay Later. There is also a lot of opportunity here since this is an industry that is slow to evolve given the regulatory barriers.

Career - think of what finance career opportunities you would be interested in. This can vary from investment professionals (investment banking, PE, VC) to accounting, and other roles.

Hi Kaitlyn,
One extra thing you can do is to look and see if your high school allows you to take college level class at a local community college. These are usually free if you are in high school and they come with all kinds of resources.

Hi Kaitlyn,

Fully agree with the advice in the previous response.

One additional thing you may want to consider is listening to business and finance podcasts. You will get exposure to many great professionals sharing their experience and perspectives on the current financial topics. Great way to stay up-to-date and learn from experts.

Few of my favorite finance podcasts include Motley Fool Money, a16z Podcast, This Week in Startups.

Kaitlyn,

I love seeing your enthusiasm. One thing that I love about finance is that there are many different areas that you can focus on in the field of finance. There are many different types of specialties that fall under finance. For example, you can decide to go into corporate finance, accounting, tax, trade, financial operations, supply chain, marketing, finance technology and others. Some of these functions may require advanced education (e.g., a master's degree) but you can get a basic understanding in your undergraduate program in college and understand where you would like to focus.

In high school, you will want to take classes that help you in getting into a business program in college. Depending on your high school, these classes may vary but I highly recommend continuing your path in taking business related classes (such as accounting and finance), however, I also recommend taking advanced math and science classes (e.g., AP) because it shows your willingness to learn and to apply concepts and will help you in getting into the business programs in colleges that you are interested in.

Good luck!
