Likely because phones can act as a distraction and take away focus from the topic being taught.
Another big problem is that people are using AI more frequently as a means of generating answers instead of developing the skills to solve problems themselves. You're really cheating yourself if you don't invest the time into developing your own critical thinking skills.
Granted, having access to all of humanity's information in the palm of your hand can also be a very powerful and useful tool when used appropriately, but there is a time and place to utilize such a tool.

Great question Brody! I teach high school and college. The primary reasons why no phones in school:
- attention - if students are not paying attention to teacher, we may miss key learning
- engagement - students need to engage and participate in the learning process in order to retain information
- communication - phones can get in the way of in person (IRL) communications. communication skills are very important skills to develop to prepare students for college or employment
- persistence - as we all know, phones can distract us with their notifications, and take us off what we were concentrating on. in school, students need to develop skills to concentrate and stay on task for longer period of times...again to prepare for college or employment.
I hope my answers are helpful to you!
