What are the best places to put my coding skills to good use?

As a programmer, I want to put some of my skills to use, such as possibly working for different companies and labs. What are good places to apply at?

Thank you comment icon Be innovative!! Find a company that you like- maybe your local Fishing Tackle Store and research their website, go into the store, talk to the manager and the employees. Ask them what they have a hard time doing at work. See if they have any ideas. Then formulate an awesome idea that could make a difference for that business and put together a pitch deck to how you could add value by doing XYZ. Always focus on the value you can bring. Don't say, I can program for you- come up with an idea. Show creativity. Aimee Gordon

Hi Denzel. There are so many opportunities for programming and coding, the possibilities are nearly endless. I've found that the podcast CodeNewbie has been a very interesting resource. Each episode focuses on a successful guest's path to both increasing their expertise and what he or she was able to accomplish. For example, I've heard several episodes about guests who had put their skills to good use by creating an app geared towards helping people in need. Find a need and search for a clever answer and you'll be successful.

Not sure if you are in High School or College.
* High School - many companies offer summer internship programs to high school students.
* College - many companies offer internship programs or also participate in cooperative education programs.
These programs can be competitive and deadlines may be approaching.

Checkout the websites of major software companies, or technology companies in your area, for more information.

Jamie’s Answer

Even programming has fields of expertise. Yes, opportunities are endless, but senior programmers who know specific fields might be able to earn more, such as telecommunication networking software, cybersecurity software, data analytics, robotics, etc. depends on where and how you'd like to start.

Search in google with keywords like: "top companies in software defined networking", "top companies in healthcare management software", then look at the job requirements for software developers or software engineers. You will be able to zoom in to something you like. By putting you coding skill to good use, working in specific projects let you see the RESULTS in how things work and you will find a field that's considered "cool" to you.
