PPEs are very important part of any job and they clearly have a purpose that they serve. You find them a little hard to work with if you are not used to wearing them, but it is just a matter of getting used to and they become second nature once you get used to them. COVID-19 has taught us the importance of wearing masks as a key PPE and as we started wearing it at our jobs it was a little difficult at the beginning and we were not used to it. We also wear safety glasses and those masks can make it harder to see thru the glasses they fog up thru your own breathing. But there are options to tackle those challenges and once we got over those, the masks have now become a second nature to us. We feel something is missing if by mistake we leave our desk without our masks on.

Barbara’s Answer

Great question! PPE is so important in the workplace. In my previous career I worked for a company that built locomotives and not wearing the proper PPE was not only dangerous but a violation of policy. Wearing PPE is important so you don't get hurt or injury yourself. Wearing safety glasses can keep debris from damaging your eyes. Gloves can keep your tools from slipping and cutting your hands. Hard hats or bump caps can keep your head safe from bumping it on something and causing a concussion. Steel toed boots or metatarsal boots can keep your foot from being crushed. An injury can be serious and sometimes cause expensive medical bills and loss of work. While PPE may not always be comfortable it is designed to keep us safe. I can remember times when wearing my safety glasses kept me from debris from welding that was being blown around by the fans from getting into my eyes. Hope this was helpful.

Thank you comment icon Hi Barbara: Your advice is very insightful. Thank you sharing your experience and the need to wear PPE (e.g., safety glasses, gloves, steel toed boots, etc.). These are very good points. Sheila Jordan
