Emma, it can depend on how many options you're considering, but assuming they're all similar options in a similar field of work, shadowing can be one approach to see if you like or dislike a certain profession.


If shadowing is not possible, talking to at least one person already working in the profession you're considering can give you a chance to ask them questions to get an idea of how closely that profession matches what you're looking for or would enjoy.

Try shadowing different specialties. Something like Emergency Medicine which is quite glamorous on TV can actually be pretty awful to those ill suited to the profession. I am a radiologist and when I entered medical school, the field of radiology sounded boring. But it is actually pretty interesting and always changing. Keeping up to date on latest developments is anything but boring!
