What makes a good scholarship essay?
Obviously, I need to follow the directions, use correct grammar and punctuation, express ideas and opinions clearly, etc. ...But, makes a winning essay a winning essay? Is there anything special I should do to make my writing and proposals stand out?

Hi Andrea,
A great question. What people really look for in these instances is making it about you. What separates a good essay from a great essay is to take the theme of your essay and relate it to your life. Relate it to how is has changed you, how it has shaped you, and what led you to write the very essay you writing today. I received a competitive scholarship about ultimately what the benefit would mean to me. Combining it with the grades I was earning, I referenced my humble beginnings, that I was the second person in my family to go to college, and what I planned to do with the knowledge obtained through the use of the scholarship. They want to see what these things mean to you, and that always shines through.
Thanks!
Mike

Be original and creative but most importantly, be honest. A scholarship essay is an opportunity to express yourself in a way that showcases your story but you need to make sure that your essay stays on track in responding to the specific question. Once you have written your essay, read it out loud to a friend and get some feedback. Ask them if your essay responds to the question. Ask them what stands out to them.
