Tips for Networking with Filmmakers in Atlanta and Maximizing Volunteering Opportunities?

I am a recent graduate from NYU Tisch School For The Arts. I’m moving to Atlanta and looking to connect with filmmakers in the area, with the goal of working as a production assistant or taking on any role on set. Based on my research, volunteering at film festivals seems like one of the best ways to get started. While I’m more than happy to volunteer, I want to ensure I’m making the most of the experience and building valuable connections. Could you offer any advice on how to network effectively in this environment or suggest other ways I can engage with the local film community?

Hello, Kenyatta !

Congratulations on your Film and Television Degree from one of the leading schools in the country. I am pleased to give you some advice about the business. You have already been East and Southwest, soon to be moving South, so you have already experienced regional nuances which is always exciting !

You have done your research. Atlanta is rapidly growing as a film and television hub. It's not going to be much different there than it is in New York, as far as the professionals go. They are doing some mainstream and high quality work in Atlanta right now. I would suggest getting a polished resume and just start applying for work. Backstage usually has notices for tech. I do acting, so I do not ever really see notices for tech except for Backstage. You should also try doing some extra work to have money coming in and try not to pass up any opportunity to be on set. You may want to join SAG so you can be open to non-SAG and SAG projects. Doing extra work is a great opportunity to network, too.

You can do a search for all the production companies and studios in Atlanta, make a list and go to each of their websites. Go to their "career" or "employment" link on the website and frequently check to see what positions they are hiring for and apply directly on their websites. It's just going to be a continuation of what you experienced in New York, only the weather will be a lot nicer! Make sure that you apply for positions that you know how to do and don't shy away from applying for paid projects. I know it's nice to volunteer, but you are ready for your first career job. You can and will do it !

Film, video and television people are just like everyone else. They like to work with authentically sincere people that continue to be alert and can manage unexpected occurrences with, for example, sound, lighting, props, the set, etc. Get situated in the apartment or house you will live in and learn the neighborhood. Navigate the city. Visit the local Chamber of Commerce and ask if there is a city or county Film Office. There may be positions at the local county or city Film Office, too.

I hope this helps. Return here to ask more about your career as you go along. I am excited for you because I relocated for college, too, than moved to Los Angeles and then to New York City, so it's quite an adventure and lots of great things can happen ! Best wishes in all you do !
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much Michelle for responding to my question! Can I ask about your journey from Los Angeles to New York City? What inspired you to move there? Kenyatta
Thank you comment icon I moved from upstate New York, to Sacramento, CA then to Hollywood, then to New York City, then another relocation where I've situated. I had a great wonderful experience in L.A., but I had to be true to myself. It was starting to get extremely good for the acting, but I also wanted other things which ended up being in NY. Everything worked out and it was super awesome, each and every experience, but my heart is in New York State, really. Michelle M.
Thank you comment icon I understand! Although I am moving to Atlanta to explore career opportunities. My overall goal is to move to Los Angeles but sometimes my heart strings pull me back to New York. I want to do what's best for my career as a writer and producer in film which is why I think Los Angles would be great but I do miss my community in New York. Do you receive more opportunities for film opportunities in Los Angles or New York more? Kenyatta
Thank you comment icon Definitely Los Angeles. They do not like my "type" in New York but in L.A. I was considered generic (more or less neutral) which was good for work. Michelle M.

Bright’s Answer

Congratulations on moving to Atlanta, a fantastic city for filmmaking. Networking is key, and volunteering is a brilliant way to get your foot in the door. To maximize your efforts, target the right festivals, go beyond the basics, be genuinely interested, and follow up after the festival.

Networking beyond festivals involves attending local film community events, such as screenings, workshops, and Q&As. Join local film organizations like the Atlanta Film Society or Georgia Production Partnership for networking opportunities, workshops, and resources. Use online groups like Facebook groups and online forums dedicated to Atlanta filmmaking to find crew calls and connect with people. Leverage your NYU connection by reaching out to Tisch alumni in Atlanta who have been in your shoes and might offer advice or introductions.

Informational interviews are also a great way to connect with filmmakers whose work you admire and ask for their advice. Be visible by creating a simple website or online portfolio showcasing your work, even student films, and keeping your LinkedIn profile updated and reflecting your aspirations.

Be patient, persistent, and authentic when building connections. Building connections takes time, so don't get discouraged if you don't land a gig right away. Be yourself and show up, keep networking, and honing your skills. With a little hustle and a genuine passion for filmmaking, you'll be making connections and finding opportunities in no time.
