Michael’s Answer

Hi Samuel,

I myself am actually from Alabama and have a friend who works for Alabama Power. While you do not need a collegiate degree to be a mechanic at Alabama Power, if you were able to obtain a Mechanical Engineering degree (actually University of Alabama has a fantastic Engineering program), it would lead to an avenue of being paid a higher wage as well as upward mobility potential if you want to manage one day. Again, it's not needed but it would afford you a great deal of opportunity.

Thanks!

Mike

Billy’s Answer

It really depends on the kind of mechanic position you are looking for.

If it is a mechanical maintenance position, then experience in that field is highly valued. This position usually is at power plants and is responsible for repairs on pipes, pumps, compressors, etc, so any maintenance position in a manufacturing environment will be favored. These jobs can be dangerous and usually pay pretty well, so they can be hard to get. Try and do things to set yourself apart from your competition. Working one of those manufacturing mechanical maintenance will go a long way. I would also try to network with some current employees on LinkedIn.

Bismarck State College offers many different two-year degrees geared toward this industry. Something to consider.

Wishing you all the best!
