Julie’s Answer

Hi Leanne,

I've worked with people getting ready for med school. Like others have said, check with local hospitals about volunteer opportunities. Around here, volunteers help guests at entrances, assist in emergency rooms, or support visitors. Becoming an EMT is another option. Some ambulance services have volunteer groups that go to events, run safety booths, help at large gatherings, and ride in ambulances for experience. I know others who have worked on ambulances as needed or became CNAs for more hands-on patient experience. Community colleges have career coaches who can guide you better. Also, consider taking classes at a community college and transferring the credits to a university. It's much cheaper than taking all your courses at a university.

Paul’s Answer

Leanne, As a high school student or recent graduate the best opportunities for you will be volunteer work at a healthcare facility. If there is a hospital near you, I would suggest that you start by making inquiries there to find out what they can offer. A second choice would be a nursing facility that cares for the elderly or the incapacitated, but this will not offer as broad a range of experience. If you have a family doctor, or if you or you family knows a doctor or a nurse, any of these people should be able to advise on you where to go or who to contact to get started. Once you get to college, and depending on where you are located, you may be able to find an opportunity to become a nursing assistant. Doing this kind of work, perhaps over your summer vacation, will give you a chance to get an inside look at what the world of medicine is like these days. I would also suggest that you try to have a conversation with any doctor or nurse you may know to learn about their experiences.

Marisel Rosa’s Answer

Hi Leanne, one thing you can try is to see if a local emergency department will hire you part-time as a scribe. You will need to have completed a medical terminology course. You can also train to be a certified nurse assistant. You will need to take a course in order to be certified. An EMT is also another option. There are courses to become a phlebotomist. If you pursue and work in any of these fields, you still need to go to college to earn your Bachelor's in order to apply to medical school. However, if you are going to continue to go to college after graduating high school, you can reach out to a professor who is involved in research and try to work in their lab, get awesome grades in sciences courses and be teacher's assistant.
