What is it like being a copywriter?
I have experience in creative writing (songwriting, poetry, screenplays, blog posts, etc.) and journalism (script for on-air broadcasting). Is this relevant experience? Or is copywriting more closely related to marketing and social media management?

One of the great things about writing is that it's a constantly shifting skill set that can pull from nearly every style imaginable. Yes, copywriting is often associated more closely with marketing and social media management, but your expertise in creative writing is a huge bonus when it comes to any style you choose to pursue. It will require you to shift gears a bit, but knowing how to write in several different styles will broaden your horizons and enable you to take on far more jobs than if you'd stuck solely with creative writing. Embrace the opportunity to widen your creative toolbox whenever you can.

Hi Faith,
if you are considering a career in copywriting, your background in creative writing and journalism will serve you well. Your experience in crafting songs, poems, and scripts demonstrates your ability to capture attention and tell a compelling story—essential skills for creating engaging advertisements and content. Additionally, your journalism experience has equipped you with strong research abilities and the skill to deliver clear, concise information, which is invaluable in copywriting. While it may be beneficial to enhance your knowledge of marketing and social media strategies, your versatility in tone and audience connection makes you an excellent candidate for this field. Embrace your creativity and explore the opportunities in copywriting!

Hi Faith,
It's wonderful that you have written in diverse styles and have a passion for the written and spoken word. That passion is one of the keys to being successful as a marketing or advertising copywriter. I agree with others who have answered your question, and I want to bring a little more attention to the point about knowing and connecting with your audience. In order to support a client's goal of explaining their product or service to a relevant audience (and hopefully incentivizing that audience to engage with the product or service), it's important for the writer to research how that audience thinks, feels, and what's important to them. A copywriter is supported in this research by other members of the marketing or advertising team. The ability to collaborate with your team and see others' points of view are also keys to being successful as a copywriter. One other thought: If you are able to take some courses in Psychology, they can provide great insight into how we humans think and what makes us tick. I found these courses vastly more helpful in my career as a copywriter than marketing courses. It sure seems like you're on track to be successful if you choose to pursue copywriting in the future. Good luck!
