What are the best ways to gain meaningful healthcare experience and build a strong resume while still in nursing school ?
I'm a full-time BSN student and single mom planning to specialize in emergency medicine and eventually return to serve Indigenous communities in rural Alaska. With limited time and resources, how can I stand out in a competitive field and grow into a leadership role in healthcare?

Have you thought about volunteering on here to give others advice? Begin a full time BSN student does not sound easy. Great work so far!
In addition maybe you can complete virtual shadow hours online in your free time.

Hi Bessie! Kudos to you pursuing your BSN while juggling your lifestyle. If time permits, I would absolutely apply to PCT positions around you, even if it is part-time. This will give invaluable experience before you graduate. It also gives you a great opportunity to network and get great supervisors to recommend you for dream role when it comes time to apply for nursing roles. I understand it is very hard to struggle working, life and being a nursing student but truly I cannot think of a better way to get experience and make your resume stand out. Employers understand usually when you are applying that you may not have any experience, but having a PCT role under your belt makes you so much more desirable. It gives you soft skills, nursing foundational skills, teaches you how to work with different personalities and ways of doing things. You mentioned you wanted to specialize in emergency medicine, I would recommend applying to tech jobs continuously! Additionally, network with your professors, they are a great resource if you utilize them well!!
Good luck!

Bessie,
Join campus organizations and actively participate. This will help you stand out and make valuable connections. You never know who you might meet and how they can help you. Research the needs in your desired field. For example, there is a shortage of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, so consider getting certified in this area or any other certification that enhances your skills. Campus organizations can also inform you about opportunities. Try to get a part-time job at a hospital and ask nurses to teach you different skills. This will set you apart and help you form connections. Find a mentor in your specialty, like a senior student or a professor. Meet with them to discuss your goals and see how they can support your success. Experienced nurses are eager to help others grow.
