Fashion will always be in style, so the outlook is wonderful ! I'm happy to know that you're starting to explore this career !
Instead of focusing on the future, you'll need to discover if you love it enough to dedicate yourself to taking the steps for becoming a Fashion Designer. It is easily a career for which you can work for yourself having your own business or get clients that request clothing or accessories. You can also apply to work at a known fashion house, too. You can even double as a stylist or do costuming for performers. This makes for lots of potential so it is quite a positive career choice.
While you are still in high school, work on all of the shows that your school does as a Costumer. Take a Family and Consumer Science Sewing class if your school offers it. Practice drawing fashion plates. You can begin looking into some fashion schools now and some, very few, colleges offer a degree in fashion, too. Places that you can consider for this are Fashion Institute of Florida in Fort Lauderdale, Miami International University of Art and Design, Florida State College at Jacksonville, and Miami Fashion Institute at Miami Dade College. I highly recommend getting a Bachelors Degree.
Obtaining your degree in fashion will open doors for either working for a company, opening your own business and getting a lot of experience while in school working on projects. You'll be aware of what is happening in the fashion world, where to go, who to see and have a lot of support through it all. Because this field is a creative and opinion career, it can be looked at as iffy, but it all depends on how dedicated you are and if you love the work. It's not something to go into for fame and fortune - but if that happens, that's great ! You will need to be around and meet a lot of people and fashion school or college will be the perfect start.
Remember that all through 12th grade next year and through college, you can start designing and making clothes for people. Get some business cards made up and hand them around. People need to know that you are available. Make clothes for yourself and wear them and mention that you made it if someone compliments it. There's a great deal of public relations and self-promotion for this work. The more you can do, the more work you will get, that's how this works and no one can say how your career will go. It depends on the person.
The skills that will be needed for this work are sewing, drawing fashion plates, fantastic written, verbal and presentational skills, measuring (you'll need to measure waists and hips but also things like rise, stride, and other measurements), and an upbeat, confident and cheery personality will help you obtain customers or be hired at a company. Be good with deadlines and never give up, even on those days when things don't go the way you've expected. It's all good. Every project you work on is an education.
