Hi š my friends, please š help! Seeking advice, guidance, your opinion, support, and hopefully some spiritual support, thank you š ?
Good morning everyone,
Hi š hope all of you are in spirits. Iām seeking some advice, guidance, and support and hoping you can provide me with it. Back in 2016, I was excepted to St. Josephās University to obtain my BSN in Nursing. I completed my pre requisite classes and then moved on. After my 1st semester of the nursing program, my Mom (in 2019) had passed away; I met with close faculty members who showed compassion and empathy, and said I needed to take a leave of absence, in which I did. When I was ready to go back, a year and 10 months after my Momās death, my Dad (in 2020) passed away. I went back to the program, but, as you can see I was very distraught from losing both my parents back to back. The year before (2018) my Mom died, I was physically assaulted and robbed in the street and that a very traumatic experience for me! I had taken another leave of absence because I was so depressed and overwhelmed; I would talk to a psychologist for a couple of years that did help me along the way. I tried once again at the program, but, I was going through such a hard time of life with all these traumatic experiences I endured, at times I wanted to give up! With that being said, the director of the program showed hardly any empathy (sheās a nurse btw and has said sheās been retiring for years now and a lot of people feel the program is great and could be even better with her gone!) and I went as far as meeting with the executive dean which the 2 are in cahoots together! I explained my situation, and as God is my witness, he said I probably donāt have what it takes to be a Nurse, itās not easy, etc, he downgraded me and how I cried like a baby, he showed 0 compassion and empathy! I left there distraught, crying and hurting all the way home! I ran into my friend whoās like an Uncle to me, talked to him, he made me believe in myself again and not to give up because God has the final say! So, I voluntarily withdrew from the program, changed my major to GS and that December with 12 credits left, received my BS! Moving forward, I prayed and asked God to please help and show me if nursing is still meant for me; I keep feeling it tugging at my heart and when I look at something, etc, nursing keeps coming up, it canāt be a coincidence, I believe itās signs from God. I say that because Iāve looked into other fields, and I keep circling back to nursing and I believe that Godās doing and plan for me. I unfortunately cannot do an accelerated program because I have to work to support myself, and I like a traditional program instead. I have applied to several colleges, some are 2 hours away with transportation, I even looked into LIU (I tried it out 5 years ago and it was a very negative experience!) and I would have to take some of my pre requisite classes over because theyāre over 5 years old. I now haves looked into Pacific College for Health & Science, itās completely online, (recorded) no in person classes (which Iām not crazy about!) and would only meet in person if you have a lab for that class (so you have no idea who anyone is a donāt have much of a connection with the professor being the classes are recorded online.) I would also have to take the TEAS exam to pass it to get in, and itās $80,000 a year! I had settled in with myself that this would have to be the best alternative, but, when I was suppose to begin studying for that TEAS exam, I didnāt feel comfortable, and put it off and again suppose to, itās just not sitting right with my spirit! When I was completing my BS at SJU, I was in a class with one of the Sisters, which is part of the St. Josephās Sisters of Brentwood, LI. They are the original founders of the school, are very impactful to the school, have very high levels of leadership within the school, and have a lot of respect and appreciationā¦..also have a lot of influence over the school! We became very close, I was involved in a lot of her activities, and she was very supportive to me! I was talking to a friend recently, she told me that I need to listen to my gut and instincts, because theyāre tugging at me! She recommended that I reach out to the Sister and meet with her for help and support. She said that I wasnāt dismissed from the program, I willing dropped the program, and earned another degree. She also had looked into the nursing handbook which clearly states that if you fail a class, you have 1 more opportunity to try again; I never had such opportunity because 1. I never failed any classes I had taken in the program and 2. I withdrew before I was deemed a failure! She said that I should of made a complaint against the dean, but, can use that as a stepping stone to get my case back to where it should be. I told her I miss my old school-itās like a family , the program was good, and from having experience with it already, I know what to expect and how to prepare myself for it! She also said that anyone can apply to a school they received a degree from, I would be applying as a new student and degree. Sheās really encouraging me about this, and believes the Sister is the person I need to reach out to and connect with that can possibly help me make it happen. So I ask all of you from reading all of this (sorry about that) what is your honest and sincere advice , opinion, and thoughts? I look forward to hearing from you, thank you! š š

You are a person of great strength and conviction and what you have gone through the past few years gave you the ability to not only have keen insight but also the great ability to help others. You are truly an amazing person !
I liked reading what you wrote, and I will give advice but I need to know what you got your degree in to accurately advise academically. You said GS and I am not sure what that is. Is it General Studies by any chance ? I would not have advised you to get a Bachelors Degree in General Studies as it doesn't apply to any career. Employers never ask for that degree.
I get that your main goal is to become a nurse. I also understand that you like Saint Joseph's program. But you have made a good choice by coming here to get feedback that you may not ordinarily get. I am usually very frank but care about and understand your situation. I want the best path for you taking everything into consideration.
I realize that you are apprehensive to try a different route, but I think that it may be your best bet. You want to be a Nurse and that is really awesome. My advice is to go for your Associates Degree (only two years) at a community college in Manhattan. The ones in Manhattan are Borough of Manhattan Community College on Chambers Street and Guttman Community College at West 40th Street. You need to register for orientations at these colleges to get a feel for them first and come to a decision as to what to do. The other college is in a very dangerous area not in Manhattan, so I won't suggest that one. There are two in Brooklyn. A good one that offers a nursing program is Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. The other one in Brooklyn is not in a good area either.
So, do you think you can pivot to doing something you never expected to do by making it a bit easier on yourself ? Those nursing programs are two years in duration. They're very close to where you live and would save you the commute to Long Island. Attending a community college in Manhattan or Brooklyn for an Associates Degree in Nursing will save you time and money. I also agree with you - people should never do a Nursing Program online or through an accelerated fast track program. Nursing is a very hands on people oriented career and students need the continual interaction that will prepare them for real world patients.
While you are exploring to decide what to do, why not register at a local Home Health Agency and get the training to do home care. They may send you to work in any of the five boroughs, though, so see if you are flexible for that or open to be sent outside of Manhattan. Having home care experience will acclimate you as a foundation to becoming a nurse.
The final decision is ultimately up to you. Stay in contact with the Sister as she sounds like a good mentor for you. Sometimes our plans get side-tracked or get extended and I had that with college making it necessary to delay the start of college a semester and a gap year between my sophomore and junior year. I thought I was going to move to L.A. at that time, but plans for that had to wait for two more years. It was frustrating at first but I made the most of it and I can assure you, you too can ace a change of plans, too. Many people do it. For you, I advise doing your nursing path locally and soon enough, you'll be applying for Nursing jobs.
I hope this helps and I wish you the best in everything ! Never give up on your dream career - people need you !

1. Identify your learning style. Do you learn better with hands-on activities or prefer virtual learning? Use this to guide your program choice.
2. Explore programs offering financial aid. Check resources like your local library for options.
3. Research programs such as Guild and Ed2go.
4. Remember, with effort, you can complete any program. If nursing is your goal, there's a program ready for you.
