How much of fashion merchandising is related to learning about businesses and how you can improve those businesses?
I am a college freshman and am going into the field mostly blind but wanting to learn more about the way this degree applies in the field. I have been working in retail for several years and would like to see things more from the business end about how and why things are chosen and what decisions go into that. #Spring2025

I don't work in fashion, however, it's never a bad idea to understand the business side of any business. While I think that fashion would be an interesting environment to experience first hand, business exist to make money. Congrats to you for thinking of how industry works!

I graduated with a degree in Fashion Merchandising & Product Development from University of Arkansas in 2016. When it comes to how much your degree in Fashion will be business focused really depends on the school/program. A lot more programs now are teaching more business related courses with Fashion degrees so I don't doubt you'll learn the business side. Just not sure how much will be business focused. For mine I felt like it was split 50% business & 50% design/textiles/etc. I would look into the course requirements for that major and you should be able to gather what you'll be learning :) Hope this helps!
