Pavel’s Answer

you need to start with books on plastic anatomy for artists. plastic anatomy differs from regular anatomy for doctors. in parallel with this, draw models of the skeleton and skull, ecorche and muscles of the torso. if you just draw, without knowledge, without analysis, without books, then you can draw redrawing the same mistakes, without the ability to even see these mistakes, so the answer about "obsessive drawing" is not entirely appropriate. you should start with drawing plaster models, because they do not move, they are white - the surface tone will not interfere, distract. after that you can move on to live sketches from life. the lighting should be clear and understandable, reflectors must be installed to create light reflexes so that the light reveals the shape, volume of the object. at the initial stages, you should avoid complex angles, complex poses, excessive complexity will bring nothing but frustration to a beginner. a useful book on anatomy will be the works of Gottfried Bammes. It would not be superfluous to make copies of drawings and paintings of those whom we call great artists of the past, talented draftsmen and anatomists. It is worth avoiding drawing from photographs - in the translation of a flat image onto a plane there is nothing that will allow you to study the object of the image, you need to look at a real three-dimensional volume in space and fix it on the plane of the sheet, only by drawing from life can you learn to draw.

Life drawing. Go to Life Drawing sessions. Draw people on the street. There are Life Drawing websites. Read books on how to draw anatomy. Practice your gesture drawings, Make detailed studies. Draw the same pose from different angles and take classes/ listen to tutorials. But yeah, the best way to improve your fundamentals in anatomy is to practice in Life Drawing sessions.

Wyatt s’s Answer

Hello Mr. Matthew,

As an artist/animator, I believe that acquiring a better understanding of anatomy will improve the work of anyone, whatever kind of art they practice.

a·nat·o·my - /əˈnadəmē/
noun
1. the branch of science concerned with the bodily structure of humans, animals, and other living organisms, especially as revealed by dissection and the separation of parts.
"he studied physiology and anatomy"
2. a study of the structure or internal workings of something.
"Machiavelli's anatomy of the art of war"

I would suggest that the study of both aspects of Anatomy would be helpful to you, but especially the latter one. Understanding the body is good, but understanding the soul is better.

Everyone: Writers, Artists, Animators, Doctors, Dentists who strive to understand and truly care for the people they serve will be far better in their craft than those who see only the cover and treat only the symptoms. (look up the definition of symptom) .

You live in New York. I have been there. Opportunities abound, my friend.

Sincerely,

Mr. Wyatt s Miles
