Are game design companies constantly looking for interns?

I plan to go into Digital Media and Design in college so I can learn how to become a Video Game Developer. I was thinking that if I wanted to get a chance at joining a game company, an internship at one might be good for my resume. Are U.S. Game Design companies always open to hiring interns?

Cuong’s Answer

It's a good mentality that you're thinking about internships before you start college.

Yes, it will help you a lot if you can snatch yourself an internship but it is very competitive. Getting your foot in the door by talking to someone in the companies can help you understand what kind of skills and credentials you would need.

If you can't land an internship or you want to get a feel and understanding how to create video games. Try using Unity 3D or Unreal, these two are top game engines. I was able to create my own video game by using Unity 3D for a project. I created the graphics, UI, animations, characters, and coding. Most coding languages that are used in game engines are C#, C++, and Java. I mainly write in C# for Unity 3D

Christy’s Answer

Some larger companies, such as Zynga, have internships, but they are sought after and hard to get. Companies don't exactly need to go looking for people. There is stiff competition to get these rare positions.

Christy recommends the following next steps:

Contact game companies (start with the HR department) and ask about internships.
