Nurses, what advice do you have to someone deciding between Associates or Bachelors when going into nursing? #Spring25 ?

I am 34 and a single mom who is going back to school. I am thrilled and determined, looking forward to starting this September. I am currently trying to decide which direction to take for my degree and doing research on the differences. In your personal and professional opinion could you give me some guidance please?

Thank you for your assistance. :)

An associate's degree is fine, but depending on where you work in the future, some places might want you to get your bachelor's degree. You can start with an associate's if you want, and cross that road if you end up at a place that would like you to get your bachelor's afterward. You could also probably get some sort of assistance from your future workplace when you go back for your bachelor's as well. Or you can just go straight for your bachelor's and not have to worry about it in the future. There is the fact that with a bachelor's degree you will make more money than an associate's degree as well. And some workplaces do prefer people with a bachelor's degree over an associate's degree. In the end you should do what you think is best for you. Good luck to whatever decision you decide on.

I would personally recommend a bachelors in Nursing if you can swing it. It is regarded higher than an associates and it also gives you more opportunities for the future. The pay will likely be higher as well. There are so many options to continue and advance your career as a nurse. You could go into teaching, remote jobs, APRN etc. It is hard work but you got this-I know because I am a single mom too!

Hi! I would recommend if you had a to choose, to get a BSN. Most employers are now preferring a Bachelor's prepared nurse. But this also comes with increased pay, and more opportunities in general! Good luck!!

Many participants in this forum have noted that opportunities increase with higher nursing degrees, and I agree. The effort and challenges involved in earning a bachelor's degree are substantial, but the rewards are equally significant!

When deciding between pursuing an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) right away, it's important to consider how each option would fit into your work-life balance.
