What is the best way to ask for more experience outside of your role at work?

I currently work as a receptionist, but I recently passed a medical assistant program. I am getting pushed around with the idea of gaining more patient experience within my job, but my school conflicts with possible working hours as a nurse aide. Should I just look for another job, or should I stay planted in my role as a receptionist since it is a more flexible role? One of my upcoming classes will be M-F 9am-3pm. #Spring25

Always check the company's resource website to stay updated on what's happening. Big companies often have pages that list their activities. Also, ask your managers to find some activities for you.

Hi, Xiomahra. Thanks for reaching out! We're excited to help you reach your goals and get your dream job. Your situation reminds me of a student I know who juggles a part-time job and school. He works nights at a call center and attends classes in the morning. It was challenging to find the right schedule for him, but we managed. I asked him about his long-term goal in studying psychology, and he said he wanted to work in human resources. I told him that achieving this would require balancing work and school, but his determination to finish his degree was key.

Now, I want you to think about where you see yourself in five to ten years. Remember, you have the power to shape your future. Make informed decisions by gathering all the knowledge you need to align with your long-term goals.

Since you passed the medical assistant certification program, I'd recommend looking for jobs that allow you to practice your new skill set. If your goal is to go into the medical field one day, it's really important that you acquire as much experience as you can. While your receptionist job is flexible, it won't help you gain the medical experience you need for your future career goals (unless your reception work is within a health-related facility).
Although your upcoming schedule will keep you busy during the daytime, you can consider applying for medical assistant or aide roles at emergency clinics or hospitals, as these places generally need employees for various shifts around the clock.

Ultimately though, it's important to be realistic about your time commitments and availability. It's easier said than done to do a whole shift after a long day of school, and only you know whether or not you'll be able to balance that along with your schoolwork. There's nothing wrong with staying at your receptionist job for the time being if it helps you with your long-term goals.
