Why are GE classes important?

You go to college to learn about a specific topic, but you are required to to take Math, English, Political Science, even though that isn't your major...so what is the point? I thought that was for Elementary and High School? Why do we have to take these GE classes in college, do you think they are relevant to our degree/major? #whatisrelevant

Thank you comment icon This is basic education that all of us learn and that's what makes us educated. Having some kind of general knowledge in a ton of topics is what makes us "smart"er than other countries and what makes us a first world country. Anntaylor

Sergei’s Answer

They are not important and paradoxically that's the point. This is a good question and it relates to an important life lesson. Every class like this teaches you that in order to go for what you want, you have to sometimes do pointless things in order to get there. General education classes, for example, prove the saying from the movie Vanilla Sky; "The sweet is never as sweet without the sour". Everything great has an imperfection, however small, that just is. Just remember, it's a step towards what you were meant to be. I hope that helps.
