Benjamin’s Answer

I grew up a Cold War kid. My family lived in Germany because my father was stationed there in the Air Force. The political chest pounding and what can sometimes seem like juvenile behavior from world leaders was pretty common. There was a guy in charge of the USSR (the old Russian Soviet Union) named Nikita Khrushchev. He would famously take his shoe off and pound it on desks when he was angry. Luckily cooler heads prevailed back then, and they will likely do so again. Always keep in mind that news stations and news websites are funded mainly by advertising dollars, and nothing drives up viewership like fear.

Chermone’s Answer

Hi Gretchen, it's sweet that you care so much for your friends! There is a proverb that says "there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother (or sister)..." I don't think your friends have anything to worry about. The truth of the matter is that no one really wants to go to war. Regardless of political affiliation, war is the last desire for anyone. Unfortunately, there are situations that get blown up far beyond for political points (and it comes from both sides of the aisle). What I want you to consider is that it takes a lot even for us to get into a skirmish with another nation. That doesn't mean a war can't happen, but it does mean that people will not be drafted anytime soon.

For the draft to be instituted things would have to get immeasurably worse than what they are now! Your fears about what could happen are slim to none. So don't worry about war. There will always be rumors of war, because they are easy to say. The best thing you and your friends can do is prepare yourselves for a productive future. Get into career fields that have an expected growth, do things that are beneficial to you and stay away from things (and people) that will drag you down and impede on your quality of life. Be encouraged, you live in the greatest nation on the planet, not because we are better than anyone, but because we have the freedom to engage in countless opportunities to become so much more than we could ever think!!

John’s Answer

The fast answer is Yes, but who knows it if will be in your lifetime. The winds of political and social change can blow hard from the left and the right but in the last 60+ years this has only produced minor like conflicts. No war has been declared since 1942. The problem however, is not if we will see World War III or not but what would you consider worth fighting over? If the US is attached? If our political leaders are killed? If large numbers of our civilian population is targeted or killed? You tell me what you would want to go to war over and I will till you how likely we are to go to war.
